Report on Mens 2nd Team at Home v. Linlithgow 3 on 26th April 2007

Stirling Mens 2nd Team opened the new season with a home game against Linlithgow's 3rd team.  Top pairing, Neil McLean & Donald McLachlan, started brightly taking the first set against Linlithgow's 2nd pairing of Cubitt & McLuskie and only narrowly missing out on a second set tie-break.  Second couple, John Mills & Denness Wilson (Capt.), went one better by taking both sets to gain a valuable point in their opening tie against Linlithgow's top pairing of Mitchell & Milligan.  Ronnie Parker & James Caldwell, playing at 3rd couple, had two close sets against Linlithgow's father and son combination, N&R Heyes, but just lost out in both.  The Heyes family pairing were also too strong for Stirling's McLean & McLachlan in round 2.  However, the tie remained delicately poised at the end of round 2 with Mills & Wilson sharing the spoils against their counterparts, Cubitt & McLuskie, and with Parker & Caldwell beating Linlithgow no. 1's, Mitchell & Milligan, in two close sets.  Honours were even in the battle of the top pairings, McLean & McLachlan v. Mitchell & Milligan, in round 3.  However, the match was decided in Linlithgow's favour with Parker & Caldwell losing out to Cubitt & McLuskie and Mills & Wilson also succumbing to the deadly Heyes family combination.  Final result was a win for Linlithgow 3 by 5½ pts. to 3½.
