2006 Finals Day Match reports:

Report on Mens' Singles Final

The Mens Singles competition reached its conclusion with the top 2 seeds reaching the final.  No. 1 seed, Ali McMurray reached the final having seen off the determined challenge of Ian Carmichael in the semis.  In the other semi, George Machray (seeded 2) came through against Eduardo Zaldua in a tough encounter.

The game between these two heavy-hitting and fierce competitors was just as enthralling and intense as everyone expected.  George got off to a flyer, breaking Ali's serve to love in the opening game.  However, Ali responded quickly to break back and eventually went on to take the opening set by 6 games  to 3 with some aggressive but controlled tennis (even throwing in some top quality volleys at the net!).

George came out with renewed energy for the second set and played some terrific forehand drive winners to establish a 4-2 lead.  At this point it looked like the match was heading for a third and deciding set.  However, Ali refused to accept that the second set was lost and incredibly he managed to turn it around to take the set by 6 games to 4 and the match by 2 sets to love.  The match was enjoyed by all who watched and thanks go to Ali and George for serving up such a thrilling encounter - just what you are looking for in the Mens Final!

Report on Women's Singles Final

The Ladies' Singles competition suffered from a rather retarded progression in the early rounds this year, despite there being a relatively small number of games to be played.  This resulted in a rush to complete the final rounds in the week before Finals Day, and 2 or 3 players were forced to withdraw from the competition for various reasons.  We hope that next year the early rounds will be played in time giving everyone the best chance to take part, and encourage as many ladies to take part as possible, whatever their standard, to make it into a larger and more satisfying competition for all involved.

Despite this, a spirited final was played between Marcia McDougall, last year's runner-up, and Sally Fulton, member of the Ladies' first team and enthusiastic new committee member.  The first set started well for Sally when she won the first two games, but despite some strong serving, excellent rallies and hard hitting from both contestants, consistency and accuracy were on Marcia's side and she won in two sets to take the Rosebowl for the third time

Report on Mens' Doubles Final

Like the Mens Singles before it, the Mens Doubles final had a "heavyweight" look about it (I'm referring to the standard of the competitors - not their wastelines!) with Ali McMurray and Denness Wilson taking on George Machray and Michael Goodfellow.  Ali and George had already played their very close singles final earlier in the day and Michael had also played in the Mens Plate final.

In a fitting finale to the day the match was a high quality, closely fought encounter.  George and Michael (the umpire barely managed to control his laughter when announcing "advantage George Michael" during a game!) got off to a good start taking an early lead with Denness taking a while to get into the game.  However, Ali and Denness picked up their game and went on to take a tight first set by 6 games to 4.  The second set was similarly close but Denness' fresh legs seemed to be the key factor as Ali and Denness went on to take the second set by the same score and the match by 2 sets to love.  Congratulations go to both pairings for making it such an exciting game to finish off an excellent day.

Report on Mens' Plate Final

The Mens Plate is a competition for those who lose out in the first round of the Mens Singles.  This is an excellent way to maintain interest and ensure at least two competitive matches for all who enter the Mens Singles.

The final was between Michael Goodfellow and Ross Lang.  The standard was nowhere near the giddy heights of the Mens Singles of course but those who watched saw two players with very little between them fighting out a very close and competitive match.

Ross got off to the ideal start by breaking Michael's serve in the first game with the breezy conditions making it awkward for the server.  However, Michael immediately broke back and the next two games went with serve.  Ross then moved into what looked like a set-winning lead at 5 games to 2. However, Michael rallied strongly with some stunning passing shots blunting Ross' tactic of coming to the net and at only 5-4 down it looked odds on that Michael was going to complete his recovery to take the set.  Somehow Ross just managed to hold on and take the first set by 6 games to 4.

The second set was a similarly close affair but, despite some very close games (and more examples of Michael's amazing ability to hit winning passing shots), Ross made fewer errors to take the set by 6 games to 2 and the match by 2 sets to love.
